Editor: At the beginning of the last run at the Raven Theater in Windsor I am reminded of your article (Raven Theater Windsor closing its doors, front page, Oct. 8) quoting three Raven principals that the Windsor theater was ahead of its time. In the moment I dismissed this as self-serving drivel but now I wonder if they meant “We did not understand or care about the Windsor market for live performance and consequently could not fill a 75-seat theater for a few days a month.” Perhaps Gandalf should have told them that things are a little different here in the Shire. Now as the ravens fly north it is fitting to thank all of the donors who gave generously to bring more live theater to Windsor. Our funds contributed to some good shows and toward advancing local knowledge that perhaps we can use one day.

General Plan Update
Editor: We wish to thank Sam Salmon for voicing the concerns of so many of us in his Nov. 26 letter to the editor. One of the concerns he presented relates to the need for growth to be capped at a reasonable number of new homes per year. As he states, there are currently almost 1000 units in various stages of approval. In addition, there is no apparent building requirement for a slow phasing of these units over time so the town can properly manage the influx of new residents (approximately 3000 people). In addition, the Alternatives Evaluation Criteria in the 2040 General Plan Update states that the town is to provide opportunities for the construction of 440 new housing units by 2023 or approximately 50 units per year. Since the number of units currently in the pipeline vastly exceeds this goal, it seems prudent to put the brakes on approval of further projects for a period of time. Another concern that Sam addresses is the potential destruction of the open space and working agricultural lands surrounding us for the purpose of more development. A prime example of an area at risk is the 60 acres of vineyards north of Jensen Lane.

This is a crucial time as the General Plan Update is currently in process. If you share these concerns or have additional concerns and desires regarding Windsor’s future, please convey them to the council, the planning commission and the town staff so that we can all be part of preserving what makes Windsor special while also helping to create a positive direction for the future.
