Editor: I am a cub scout. Last week a lady from the Windsor
Historical Society taught me about the first settler in Windsor.
His name was Robert Cunningham. We met at his house which was the
first house in Windsor. It¹s by the senior center swimming pool.
It¹s over 100 years old! She told me how he came before his wife,
Isabella, and Mary Jane, his daughter, to get land and build a home
by Windsor Creek.
In those days the creek always had water in it and salmon! His
wife drove two wagons with their daughter and all their stuff to
Windsor back during the gold rush days. She was a brave lady. They
were a strong and hard working family and set the example for all
Windsor families today. His granddaughter, Clara, married Mr.
Hembree. A street is named after him by my house! He built a
Spanish looking house by Windsor Creek too.
Clara had a beautiful sunken garden with a pond. I explored the
garden. I saw old rock steps and rocks that they placed down to
circle the garden. The pond has cement walls. It was cool. I wish I
could have gone inside the houses but Barbara Ray (my friend from
the Historical Society) told me it wasn¹t safe but it soon would
be.
I hope the city of Windsor will restore the houses and garden
quickly so I can look inside. I want to watch the people restore it
and I might want to help if it¹s not too hard. I could pull out all
the weeds! I¹m glad Barbara Ray took time to tell me all this neat
stuff.
