Editor: I never could have predicted the overwhelming response
that has come as a result of my letter about HUSD. I am
appreciative that so many parents, teachers and others in our
community have approached me about it, but I am sad to report that
most have communicated additional concerns which confirm and
further complicate those that I voiced. Overall, I am glad if the
letter has had a part in provoking such an important dialogue.
In response to Ms. Beard¹s editorial invitation to the PTO
meeting, I accept, and hope others do too. I also appreciate that
she and others have come forward lately to encourage parents to be
a part of this and other committees and organizations.
However …
There is an important point, ironically highlighted by Ms.
Beard¹s invitation, that I believe is at the root of most parents¹
and teachers¹ concerns: If there are so many organizations,
committees, boards and administrators who profess to have a
communication function, then why do so many parents and teachers
feel a lack of open, honest and effective communication between
themselves and the administration?
I feel very strongly that I am a ³part of the change² by voicing
my opinion, as is every parent and teacher who speaks out, so I
hope we continue to do that. It¹s as important as my time
volunteering or anything else that I or other parents and teachers
give of themselves to better the schools.
To conclude, I encourage all parents and teachers to please,
voice your opinion and give feedback, loudly! Tell the
administrators what you¹ve told me, other teachers, parents, and
what you¹re talking about with each other, because it matters.
Whether you¹re active in every committee at your school or none,
your child is a citizen here, and your opinion matters as much
as anyone else¹s.
Looking forward to the change, and happy to be a part of it.
