Editor: Does anyone remember the novel “1984?” Well, it seems
that 1984 has arrived, just a couple of decades late. In the novel,
there was a “Big Brother” government which, along with invasive
spying on its citizens, specialized in “the big lie,” with slogans
like “Love is Hate,” and “War is Peace.” When the actual year 1984
came along, things seemed pretty normal, and author Orwell’s
predictions had not, for the most part, come to pass.
Now, in 2003, we have an autocratic “administration” which has
instituted a massive program of invasive “data gathering” on U.S.
citizens on the pretext of “security.” The junta in Washington,
D.C. has given us a “Healthy Forests Act,” which promotes cutting
down the forest. They have given us a “Clear Skies Act,” which
rolls back clean air regulations. They have given us a “Patriot
Act,” which undermines the basic civil liberties the original
patriots fought to establish in this country.
They have given us an “Education President” who is presiding
over the de-funding of the nation’s education system. And, of
course, they are poised to launch a war to assure peace.
Thanks to the Dubya cartel, we are now experiencing all that was
predicted for 1984. They’re a little late, but then the Republicans
are known for being pretty “retro.” Michael J. Symons,
