The Windsor Wrestling Lady Jags headed to Folsom High School Saturday, Nov. 26 for their first challenge on the mat.
The team, primarily made up of freshmen, also includes one sophomore, one junior, and four returning seniors. It has more than tripled in size over past years, giving Windsor an opportunity to compete for the North Bay League title this year.
Half of the team competed on the mat at Folsom, many with only three weeks of wrestling under their belt. Of the eight girls that competed, two earned medals.
Overall, head coach Scott Hayman was pleased with the results of his young charges in their season debut.
“I was most impressed with the leadership displayed by the senior wrestlers, and the focus and courage demonstrated by the new wrestlers,” he said.
Senior captain Yulisa Medrano shined throughout the day in dominating every opponent to finish the tournament at 4-0, including three pins and one major decision.
Also medaling for the day was freshman Molly Cox, a second-year wrestler who walked through her first two matches and advanced to the 106 pound finals before losing 10-1.
Another notable performance was turned in by returning senior Andrea Rocha, earning a fourth place medal in the 121 pound weight class and ending the day at 3-2.
Coach Kenny Dixon, new to the Lady Jags coaching staff said, “This team has tremendous potential and heart. There is a lot of hard work in front of us. We’re starting with the fundamentals and taking our time to teach the sport. Most of all I want all of the girls to have a positive experience stay healthy, and enjoy the season.”
