Windsor takes two of three; eyes postseason berths
The Lady Jaguars are rounding into postseason form following a great stretch of softball, notching three wins in four North Bay League outings to move into second place.
Windsor (9-3, 15-6-1) notched wins over Montgomery (7-5), Santa Rosa (11-1) and Cardinal Newman (5-2), with the lone loss coming in a 15-2 setback to Rancho Cotate.
At press time the Jags were in preparation for the two games of the regular season, starting with a May 9 rematch against visiting Montgomery (Senior Day), and finishing up on Thursday, May 11 at Casa Grande. Both games start at 4 p.m.
Also looming on the horizon is the league playoff tournament, which involves the top four finishing teams. Windsor is a lock to finish in the top three and would face Montgomery in the first round on May 16 (site TBD). The Jaguars are also a good bet to land a decent seed in the North Coast Section Division 2 playoffs, which start in two weeks.
Jags on a roll
Windsor squared off with visiting Montgomery in a key May 1 clash, spotting the Vikings an early 2-0 lead. The Jaguars exploded for six runs in the third frame to grab a 6-2 cushion, and kept the lead the rest of the way en route to a 7-5 win.
Kayla Scott earned the mound victory, while top hitters were Scott (3 for 4, run), Averie Gehrett (2 for 4, 2B) and Anis Acevedo (1 for 4, 2B, RBI).
The home-standing Jags climbed all over Santa Rosa the following day, staking pitcher Sydney Hage (4 IP, 4 hits, 4 Ks) to a big early lead on their way to an 11-1 rout. Leading hitters included Ashley Golding (2 for 3, 2 runs), Gehrett (2 for 3, 3B, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) and Scott (2 for 2, 4 RBIs).
Windsor endured a tough afternoon in a May 3 home clash with Rancho Cotate, as the first-place Cougars tallied four runs in the fourth and six in the fifth in an eventual, 15-2 win. Hage (7 IP, 13 hits, 15 runs, 3 Ks) took the loss, while top hitters were Gracie Hernandez (2 for 3, run) and Alyssa De Casas (2 for 3, 2B).
“Wednesday was a tough loss for us,” said coach Morgan Rasmason. “We handed Rancho the game and played nowhere near like how we had been. We had six errors which was our downfall and not at all our typical defense so I was disappointed we weren’t a better match up for them.”
The Lady Jags traveled to Cardinal Newman for their fourth straight game on May 4, trailing 2-1 heading into their last at-bat in the seventh. Windsor put together a winning rally, taking advantage of three Cardinal errors in pushing across four runs en route to a 5-2 win.
Scott claimed the mound victory while Kasandra Jaramillo (3 for 4, 2B, run, 2 RBIs) swung the hot bat for the Jaguars.
“We started the week strong and then went downhill but pulled it back together in the Newman game,” Rasmason said.
