Windsor returns nine veterans to improved squad
It’s been a while since the Lady Jaguars have been a pennant contender in high school girls tennis, with the North Bay League regarded as one of the best in the North Coast Section.
But the Jags are out to shake things up this fall with a solid core of returnees and a strong mix of first-year players, stamping 2017 as a resurgent year for the program.
Head coach Anna Kohtz is back for another campaign, optimistic about her squad and looking for improvement in the season ahead.
The Windsor roster features a group of seasoned veterans that includes seniors Cecillia Smith, Karli Gugel and Alyssa De Casas, juniors Mia Vera, Kimberly Nguyen and sophomores Bella Fogel, Grace Nusair, Valeria Corona and Kamryn Crowley.
Getting their first taste of high school tennis are varsity newcomers; sophomores Sorelle D’Agosta, Lauren McCabe, Ashland Williams and Sophia Romero, and freshmen Alana Stadum, Emily Mounts, Annie Gugel and Faith Gossman.
“We lost three seniors (to graduation) and two players didn’t return this year, but with the return of Cecillia Smith and the improved play of Mia Vera and Bella Fogel, along with our newcomer Sorelle D’Agosta, I feel we’re solid,” Kohtz reported. “Lastly, we have a deep bench and dedicated players who are ready to step in should we need them.”
Returning doubles players Nguyen, Nusair, De Casas and Karli Gugel, in addition to newcomers McCabe and Stadum should account for consistent doubles wins this season, giving Windsor a chance to score more match victories.
The Jaguars will kick off NBL action on Thursday, Sept. 7 when they visit Rancho Cotate in Rohnert Park. Windsor will host Cardinal Newman in its first home match at Hiram Lewis Park on Tuesday, Sept. 12. All matches start at 3:30 p.m.
