Summer hoops – Sophomore Meredith Gilbertson went up for two in the annual Windsor Summer Shootout Basketball Tournament on June 22.

Five teams compete; Fernley is unbeaten to take first

The Lady Jaguars played host to five other schools in the annual Windsor Summer Shootout Basketball Tournament on June 22 and 23, an event that serves as the unofficial highlight of their off-season program.

Participating teams included Casa Grande, Piner, Ukiah Gold, Ukiah Purple and Fernley (Nevada).

Fernley went unbeaten for the tournament with a 5-0 record to take first place, while Casa Grande finished second at 4-1.

The Lady Jags, missing several team members, still posted a respectable 2-3 record for the tourney, including overtime losses to Casa Grande and Piner.

“We played very short-handed all weekend,” WHS coach Joe Passalacqua reported. “In two games, we only had five players and the others we had either six or seven.”

The Jags were led by incoming sophomore forward Meredith Gilbertson, who was the team leader in both scoring and rebounding.

The Windsor summer roster featured senior Andre Meza, juniors Paige Finney, Jenna Burris and Savahna Smith. Sophomores included Gilbertson, Abby Barribeau and Grace Boyle. Incoming freshman Zoe Finney also filled in for the tournament.

Calling all players

The Lady Jaguar invite all WHS students who would like to play basketball next season to the next team practice on Monday, July 1 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the small gymnasium at Windsor High School.
