Things didn’t go as scripted for the Lady Jaguars in the second week of North Bay League hoops, dropping back-to-back heartbreakers to Santa Rosa and Rancho Cotate.
The setbacks came just a week removed from a Ruby Division championship at the West Coast Jamboree and pushed Windsor’s season record to 7-6, falling to 1-2 in the NBL.
At the time of this writing, the Lady Jags were preparing to resume league play at Maria Carrillo on Jan. 8, followed by a Wednesday, Jan. 10 home tilt with visiting Montgomery. Windsor will wrap up a busy stretch this Friday, Jan. 12 when it hosts Cardinal Newman. All varsity games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
The Jags drew a tough assignment in their Jan. 2 clash with visiting Santa Rosa, playing the Panthers to a 10-10 first quarter deadlock before trailing 23-16 at the half. Windsor cut the deficit to two points by the end of the third, but the visitors did just enough down the stretch to hang on for a 43-39 win.
Hannah May and Tori Russotti paced the attack with nine and eight points respectively.
Windsor got off to a slow start in its Jan. 4 home meeting with Rancho Cotate, spotting the Cougars an 11-5 first quarter lead. Trailing 30-17 at the half, the Jags mounted a steady comeback to cut the deficit to 10 by the end of three.
Led by an unstoppable effort by senior center Gabby Giddings, Windsor completed the miraculous comeback in the final seconds of regulation, sending it into extra frames knotted at 66-all. But the Cougars would not give in, regrouping in overtime to post an eventual 79-74 win.
Giddings led the team with a season-high 32 points, while other top scorers included Russotti (12) and Cecellia Smith (12).
