Windsor falls to Bishop O’Dowd in NCS opener
A resurgent softball season came to a sudden end in the opening round of the North Coast Section Division 2 playoffs, as the No. 9 seeded Jaguars fell at No. 8 Bishop O’Dowd, 3-0.
Windsor wrapped up a strong 2019 campaign with an overall mark of 12-10.
“I’m happy with the season, we had a lot of individual growth and improvement,” Windsor coach Morgan Rasmason reflected, citing the emergence of rising stars Moana Bullock, Anis Acevedo and Kelly Tagnolli. “Our goal was to win league and we came in second, but it’s always good to qualify for playoffs and get in that extra competition.”
Jaguars burned by Dragons
The Jags rode the strong arm of senior pitcher Kayla Scott (7 IP, 3 runs, 14 Ks) through the first five scoreless innings in the NCS opener at Bishop O’Dowd on May 20, engaging Dragons’ pitcher Elizabeth Avery in a battle of aces.
The game turned in the decisive sixth inning, when O’Dowd pushed across three runs, giving Avery all she’d need to close out a 3-0 victory.
“They got a runner on, another got on with an error, then their two best hitters came up back-to-back,” Rasmason recalled. “I had the thought to walk one but then it would be bases loaded with the other up to bat, so we risked it and she hit a three-run homer.”
The Jaguars had a quiet day at the plate, recording just two hits all afternoon.
“We played pretty solid defense all game, we just made zero adjustments at the plate,” Rasmason noted. “JV call-up Adriana Novak was a designated player for us and got on base and Kayla Scott got a hit but never scored. It was just an offensive flop for us – I think we could’ve beaten them had we caught up to their pitcher.”
