Windsor logs 11-4 win over Casa Grande
The Lady Jaguars will be looking for a strong finish to the North Bay League softball campaign when they close out the schedule this week with a pair of games.
Windsor (4-8, 7-13) snapped a five-game losing skid last week, rebounding from a 13-0 loss at first-place Rancho Cotate with an 11-4 romp against visiting Casa Grande.
The split lifted the Jaguars into fifth place in the NBL standings, with upcoming scheduled games against Montgomery (May 10, after press time) and the league finale on Thursday, May 12 at Ukiah (4 p.m.).
At the start of play on Monday, Rancho Cotate held down the top spot in league with an 11-1 record, followed by Montgomery (10-2), Cardinal Newman (8-4), Maria Carrillo (6-6), Windsor (4-8), Ukiah (4-8), Santa Rosa (3-9) and Casa Grande (2-10).
Although the team has been reduced to a spoiler role in the second half of the season, the Lady Jags will not mail it in for the final two games.
“We’re trying to win as many games as possible, and we’re going to fight to win them both,” WHS coach Shannon Pellman said. “It boils down to attitude and effort; we’ll see how we’re progressing in those areas. If we play hard and together, we can compete with anyone.”
Jags take one of two
Windsor paid a visit to first-place Rancho Cotate on May 3, spotting the Cougars a three-run lead in the first. Rancho busted it wide open in a five-run third inning and added four more in the fourth frame en route to a 13-0 Cougars win.
Pitcher Caitlyn Murphy (1IP, 3 hits, 4 ERs) took the loss, while Kayla Scott (3 IP, 8 hits, 7 ERs, K) closed it out. Top hitters included Alyssa DeCasas (1 for 1) and Ashley Golding (1 for 1).
Windsor was out for a season sweep in the May 5 meeting with visiting Casa Grande, doing just that in an impressive offensive showing. The Jags pounded out 15 hits, including a home run off the bat of Shay Mendoza in jumping out to a 5-1, first-inning lead. The Jaguars iced it with three runs in the fourth and another pair in the sixth in an eventual 11-4 win.
“The girls have worked hard, and it was nice to be rewarded with a good win over Casa,” Pellman noted. “We finally started executing offensively, and it was a good game for us.”
Scott (7 IP, 10 hits, 3 ERs, 2 Ks) earned the win, while leading hitters were Ashlynn Wells (3 for 4, 2 runs), Camille Kahnberg (3 for 4, 3 runs, RBI), Mendoza (2 for 3, HR, 2 runs, RBI), DeCasas (2 for 3, RBI), Natalia Baca (2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBIs), Golding (2 for 4, run, 2 RBIs) and Scott (1 for 4).
