The Lady Jags kept pace on the North Bay League basketball circuit last week, notching two wins in three outings.
Windsor began the three-game stretch at home on Jan. 10 with a 58-54 win over Rancho Cotate, following up two nights later with a 52-25 romp at Maria Carrillo. The Jaguars finished the stretch on a down note on Jan. 14 against visiting Montgomery, falling to the Vikings 60-40.
On Jan. 16, Windsor was back on the court in the annual MLK Shootout Tournament at Marin Catholic, slipping past Dougherty Valley 47-40.
The victories pushed the Jag’s season mark to 2-3 in league and 8-9 on the season.
The girls resume league action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 against visiting Cardinal Newman and visit Ukiah on Friday, Jan. 20. Start times for the JV and varsity are 6 and 7:30 p.m.
Jags notch wins
Windsor made short work of host Maria Carrillo on Jan. 12, racing to a commanding 19-2 lead in the first quarter. The Jags led 26-6 at the half. The Pumas fought an uphill battle after intermission as Windsor cruised to a 52-25 win. Top scorers included Gabby Giddings (17 points), Hannah May (12 points), Tori Russotti (9 points, 6 rebounds), Cecellia Smith (6 points), Mattie Murphy (4 points), Jackie Vieyra (3 points) and Sabrina Simili (1 point, 4 assists, 4 steals).
The Jaguars ran into a strong visiting Montgomery squad on Saturday, holding the Vikings to just two points early in the first quarter. The Vikings closed out the period with a surge to grab a 13-3 lead after one. Montgomery led 28-16 at the half.
Windsor stayed within striking distance in the third quarter in briefly cutting the deficit to six, but the Vikings exploited a cold-shooting Jags’ team (22 percent from the field) to finish the game on a 20-9 run for a 60-40 win. Top scorers were Giddings (17), Russotti (6), May (4), Smith (3) Caitlyn Murphy (3), Murphy (3) and two points each from Simili and Vieyra.
“To defeat the Vikings our defense would have to be tough, while the offense needed to produce 45-50 points,” Jags coach Jeff Paul said. “Our struggles continue to be consistent scoring and our goal this week is to continue to figure out ways to get more open shots and put the ball in the basket.”
The Jaguars made a strong showing on Jan. 16 in the MLK tourney at Marin Catholic, squaring off with Dougherty Valley. The Jags erased a 16-7 first-quarter deficit to trail 26-20 at the half. Down 38-31 after three, Windsor closed out the contest on a 16-2 run to notch a 47-40 win.
May paced the attack with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Simili (9 points) and Giddings (8 points, 9 rebounds) also played well for the Jags.
