Senior Gabby Giddings reaches 1,000 point mark in career
The Lady Jaguar varsity basketball team continued its winter roller-coaster ride with a split in a pair of games, following a strong home win over Ukiah with a disappointing loss at Casa Grande.
The mixed result pushed Windsor’s season record to 9-10 and 3-5 in the North Bay League.
“It was a tough up and down week, kind of like our season,” Jags coach Joe Passalacqua reported. “It was a good win against Ukiah and our best shooting game of the season. But against Casa, we made too many mental mistakes and that hurt us.”
A bright spot for the Jags was the milestone reached by senior and four-year center Gabby Giddings, who eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in her high school career with a 22-point outburst against Casa Grande. Giddings joins a handful of elite Windsor athletes to reach that plateau.
At press time the ladies were preparing to continue a three-game road swing this week with away dates at Santa Rosa (Jan. 23, 7:30 p.m.) and Rancho Cotate (Jan. 25, 7:30 p.m.). Windsor will return home for a non-league clash with visiting Heritage this Saturday, Jan. 27 in a 3 p.m. tip-off.
Jags notch win
Windsor came out with focus in the Jan. 17 home tilt with Ukiah, stunning the Wildcats with a 17-11 run in the opening quarter. The Jags led 24-17 at the half. There was no let-up on the defensive end in the second half, as Windsor held the ‘Cats to 14 points after intermission in cruising to a 41-31 win.
Pacing the Windsor attack were Giddings (14 points, 8 rebounds), Tori Russotti (9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists), Sabrina Simili (9 points, 3 assists, 3 steals), Hannah May (6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) and Cecillia Smith (3 points, 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals).
The Lady Jaguars were ice cold in their Jan. 19 visit to Casa Grande, going scoreless for nearly six minutes to trail 15-6 at the end of one. Windsor caught fire in the second period, erupting for 23 points to grab a 29-26 lead at the half. The game hung in the balance throughout a tight third quarter as the Jags clung to a 42-40 edge after three. But the offense would stall in the fourth quarter, as Casa Grande rallied for an eventual 56-51 victory.
