Windsor pushes overall record to 4-3
The Jaguars are coming off a mixed bag on the North Bay League softball circuit, gaining a split in a pair of games against Maria Carrillo and Santa Rosa.
Windsor began the stretch on the road against the Pumas on March 27, committing a season-high six fielding errors in stumbling to a 7-6 loss in eight innings. The girls showed their resiliency two days later against the visiting Panthers, turning in a solid all-around effort in posting a 7-3 win.
The Lady Jaguars (4-3, 1-1) will be idle this week during spring break, but will resume league action on April 10 at Cardinal Newman, followed by an April 11 home clash with perennial power Rancho Cotate. Both games start at 4 p.m.
Jags settle for split
The March 27 trip to Maria Carrillo did not go as scripted, as the Pumas answered a Jags’ solo run in the first with four in the bottom of the frame for a 4-1 advantage. Windsor came right back with a combined five runs in the next two frames to surge back into the lead, but shoddy defensive play would rear its ugly head.
The Pumas chipped away at the deficit with solo runs in the fourth and sixth to knot the contest at 6-6, and pushed across the game winner in the eighth to pull out a 7-6 win.
“We had six errors on routine plays that scored runs,” Jags coach Morgan Rasmason said. “Our defense didn’t back up our pitchers, who were doing their job. I tell the girls all the time, you can’t let a team hang around because they’ll come back to get you and that’s what happened.”
Kayla Scott tossed the first five innings, scattering seven hits while yielding four earned runs and fanning eight. Sydney Hage (3 IP, 6 hits, 0 ERs, 2 Ks) closed it out to take a tough loss. Top hitters for Windsor included Hage (3 for 3, run, RBI), Scott (2 for 4), Alyssa De Casas (2 for 5, RBI), Anis Acevedo (1 for 4, run, RBI), Kasandra Jaramillo (1 for 5, run), Averie Gehrett (1 for 3, 2B, run), Camille Kahnberg (1 for 4, RBI), Mele Pearl (1 for 3, RBI), Caitlyn Murphy (1 for 1, run) and Gracie Hernandez (1 for 4, run).
The Lady Jags were focused and ready for their March 29 home tilt with Santa Rosa, pushing across two runs in the first for a lead they would not relinquish. Windsor led from start to finish, icing it in a three-run sixth inning en route to a 7-3 victory.
“This win was a total team effort and a good response for us after Tuesday’s game,” Rasmason noted, citing several players moving to new positions. “I wish we’d jump on a team and score more runs earlier in the game, but I can’t complain about scoring in the sixth as long as we get the job done.”
Scott (7 IP, 8 hits, 2 ERs, 4 Ks) went the distance to earn the win, while leading hitters were De Casas (3 for 3, 2B, 2 runs, RBI), Kahnberg (2 for 4, 2b, HR, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), Scott (2 for 4), Fatima Vigil-Figueroa (1 for 1), Jaramillo (1 for 3, RBI), Gehrett (1 for 3, 2B) and Hernandez (1 for 3).
