The Lady Jaguars continued to navigate a tough North Bay League basketball schedule, falling in recent outings to Montgomery (40-30) and Analy (43-33). Windsor was competitive in both games, but may have run out of gas in the fourth quarter each night.
The ladies (2-6, 7-18) will close out the NBL schedule this week with scheduled games at Cardinal Newman (Jan. 29, after press time) and home on Senior Night on Thursday, Jan. 31. The varsity tips off at 7:30 p.m.
Windsor falls short
The Jags came out with intensity and focus for the Jan. 22 visit to Montgomery, taking a slim, 5-4 lead after one. Trailing 17-13 at the half, the Jaguars were swamped by a 16-8 Montgomery run in the third quarter and fought an uphill battle the rest of the way en route to a 40-30 Vikings win.
Although no official scoring was available, senior guard Tori Russotti continued to light it up from three-point range to lead the team, while emerging freshman Meredith Gilbertson chipped in six points and eight rebounds.
It was more of the same in the Jan. 24 trip to Analy, playing the Tigers on even terms to forge a 21-all tie at the half.
The Jaguars continued to battle throughout a hotly contested third quarter that ended with Windsor clinging to a 31-29 edge. But the Jags ran out of gas in the final period, going scoreless in the final seven minutes of play to fall, 43-33.
“We utilized a match-up zone to slow them down and it seemed to work pretty well,” Jags coach Joe Passalacqua said. “Unfortunately, we ran out of energy in the fourth quarter and Analy was able to hold us to a single bucket.”
Freshman Maddie West, who was lost for the remainder of season with a dislocated shoulder, led the offense with eight points.
