Windsor falls to Carrillo, Ukiah
The WHS girls soccer team got a reality check in the opening week of the North Bay schedule, dropping home and away matches to Maria Carrillo and Ukiah.
Although the 3-1 loss to the nationally ranked Pumas on Sept. 13 proved a gritty test for the Jaguars, the 3-0 loss to the Wildcats was a disappointing result for a Windsor team with playoff aspirations.
“We didn’t get off to the start we wanted for league,” coach Mark Archambault reported. “Both games showed us the things that we need to work on to get ready for Santa Rosa.”
At press time, the Lady Jags (5-3-1, 0-2) were preparing to take on Santa Rosa on the Panther’s home field on Sept. 20, before taking on visiting Casa Grande at Wilson Ranch Park on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Game times for the JV and varsity are 4 and 6 p.m.
Jags fall in openers
Wilson Ranch Park was the venue for the much-anticipated Sept. 13 match with visiting Maria Carrillo, and the Jaguars were up to the task early on despite overwhelming odds.
The Pumas drew first blood midway into the first half when Windsor was called for a foul in the box, leading to a successful penalty kick and a 1-0 lead.
The Jaguars clawed back moments later when Katie Bianchi took a pass from Emily Gassaway and nailed a shot with her back to the Carrillo net to knot the contest at 1-1. The Pumas would re-take the lead late in the half and added another goal after intermission on their way to a 3-1 win.
“Our younger players are having some trouble adjusting to the speed of play and intensity at the varsity level,” Archambault noted. “Those are things we will continue to work on in practice.”
Windsor was back on the league pitch on Sept. 15 at Ukiah, coming out a bit flat offensively in spotting the Wildcats a 2-0 halftime lead.  Ukiah gained separation with an insurance tally after the break en route to a 3-0 win.
A telling statistic was the disparity in shots, with Ukiah holding a 13-7 edge in shots on goal.
“We simply got out-played,” Archambault reasoned. “We turned the ball over too much in the midfield and our back line had a couple of miscues which is uncharacteristic for them.”
