The Lady Greyhound varsity volleyball team will have a different
look this fall under new head coach John Kamra. The Santa Rosa
native takes over for former coach Kate Hickman, who stepped down
following last season.
Kamra is the third varsity volleyball coach for Healdsburg in
the past four seasons, but hopes to bring stability and a winning
tradition to a program that hasn¹t been involved in post-season
play in several years.
³I know that the past volleyball coaches only coached for a few
years, some only one,² said Kamra, who will be assisted by
returning JV coach Nancy Watanabe. ³But I love coaching, I love the
area, and I know that I will be here for many years. I plan to
start Healdsburg High¹s new tradition of excellence in
volleyball.²
The Lady Hounds are expected to return most of their starters
from last season¹s squad, which missed a top-four finish and a spot
in the league playoffs by just one match. The team should be much
improved and will battle Petaluma, Casa Grande and Windsor for an
SCL playoff berth again this fall. The top teams in the league
figure to be perennial powers Analy, El Molino and Sonoma.
³I noticed that the last time Healdsburg won the SCL was in
1985,² noted Kamra ³Its been 21 years since the last volleyball
banner and we¹ve determined that our overall goal this year is to
win SCL, but to get there we need to make the SCL playoffs. We¹ve
set the level of expectations high for the program, but I¹m sure
that the girls will thrive in it.²
Conditioning camp on tap
Healdsburg High School will hold a volleyball
conditioning/practice camp from August 17 through August 31 from
5:30 to 7:30 p.m. daily. All students interested in going out for
volleyball are encouraged to attend. For more information, email
John Kamra at [email protected].
