The surprising Lady Greyhound varsity volleyball team continued
its outstanding play last week with a pair of hard-fought league
wins over Windsor and Casa Grande. On Saturday, the ladies (9-2,
2-0) capped a great week by winning the annual Willits
Tournament.
Healdsburg opened the league season with an incredible, five
game thriller at Windsor on Tuesday, pulling out an exciting
victory; 18-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 15-8.
The Lady Hounds stumbled out the gates, dropping the first two
games before mounting a startling comeback to win the next three,
including a 15-8 victory to win game five and the match.
Senior outside hitter Sam Erickson led the Greyhounds with 14
kills.
³This was a great match for us and if we ever get down again
2-0, we know that we can come back to win,² said Healdsburg coach
John Kamra.
On Thursday, the Lady Hounds entertained Casa Grande in their
second SCL match. After winning game one, 25-13, Casa Grande
bounced back to win game two, 25-23. However, Healdsburg kicked it
up a notch with a great service game, solid passing and strong team
defense to end the Casa bid and close out the match in four; 25-18,
25-15.
Sam Erickson had another strong outing with eight kills and six
aces. Also turning in solid outings were senior middle blocker Erin
Carlson (3 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks), Gennifer Dorr, Brittany Bonds,
Cassie Nelson, Rachel Mortensen and libero Becky Thompson.
On Saturday, Healdsburg traveled to play in the Willits
Volleyball Tournament and came home with the first place trophy.
Playing matches against Willits, Southern Trinity, Anderson Valley
and Deep Valley Christian, Healdsburg went 6-2 in pool play to
advance to the championship bracket.
In the semifinals, Healdsburg faced Willits and lost the first
game 19-25, but then eliminated the tournament host by winning the
next two games, 25-20 and 15-13. In the finals, Healdsburg faced
Anderson Valley in another thrilling match. The Lady Hounds lost
the first game, but turned it around to win the next two, winning
the match; 20-25, 25-21 and 16-14.
³This tournament was a solid win for us,² noted Kamra. ³We were
off our game in a few of the matches and let the other team hang
around and even win a game or two, but the girls wanted this win
and came together as a team to shake off the bad play and
succeed.²
