The Lady Greyhound varsity volleyball team is enjoying a solid
pre-season, as the team prepares for the upcoming Sonoma County
League campaign.
The ladies opened the pre-season last Thursday in a well-played
road match with Kelseyville, as the Lady Knights pulled out an
electrifying, five game thriller; 23-25, 25-20, 16-25. 25-17 and
15-12.
Healdsburg got some outstanding performances from several
players, including outside hitters Cassie Nelson and Samantha
Erickson, who each recorded 17 kills. The defensive player of the
game was Lady Hounds libero (defensive specialist) Becky Thompson,
who consistently made great passes off of Kelseyville spikes and
serves.
On Saturday, Healdsburg hosted four other teams in its annual
Redwood Empire Invitational Tournament, taking three of four
matches to capture second place overall.
The ladies defeated St. Helena 25-20 and 28-25, beat Clear Lake
25-20, 25-19 and turned back Piner 25-7, 25-18. The lone loss of
the tournament came against eventual tournament champion
Kelseyville: 19-25 and 20-25.
³The team is developing at a fast pace and the ladies have
picked up the basics of my offensive and defensive system and are
now working on the advanced aspects of our play,² noted coach John
Kamra. ³I¹m very proud of every player on the team. Each one has
improved as a volleyball player and we¹re coming together as a very
strong team.²
Scheduling notes: Healdsburg will close out the pre-season with
another pair of matches beginning tonight (Sept. 14) with a home
clash with visiting Ukiah at Smith Robinson Gymnasium. On Monday,
Sept. 18 the ladies play a final tune-up at Piner. Healdsburg kicks
off the SCL campaign next Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Windsor. All JV and
varsity matches are set for 4:30 and 6 p.m.
JV squad posts win over Kelseyville
The JV squad is also in the midst of a strong pre-season,
posting a three-game victory at Kelseyville last week. After
dropping the first game of the match 20-25, Healdsburg rebounded to
win the next two games, 25-22 and 19-17.
