The Eagles remained unbeaten for the 2019 high school softball campaign with another pair of lopsided wins, claiming Clear Lake and Willits as their latest victims.
At the start of play this week, Cloverdale (9-0, 15-0) held a two-game advantage in the NCL1 standings just past the halfway mark in the league schedule.
This week the Eagles will hit the road for a game at Kelseyville (April 23, after press time), before taking on the competition in the Arcata Tournament on April 26 and 27. Cloverdale will open the tourney on Friday, April 26 in a 4 p.m. tilt with Fortuna.
Eagles notch a pair
Cloverdale cleared its biggest hurdle of the league campaign in an April 16 visit to Clear Lake, pushing across solo runs in the first and second innings to grab an early 2-0 lead. The Cardinals scratched for runs in the third and sixth innings, but had no answer for the Eagles’ four-run rally in the seventh inning to secure a 6-2 victory.
Tehya Bird (7 IP, 5 hits, 0 ERs, 11 Ks) claimed the win, while leading batters were Bird (2 for 2, 2 runs), Heather Sterling (1 for 4, 3B, run, RBI), Nicky Martinez (1 for 2, 2B), Janaye Hammond (1 for 3, RBI), Alyssa Moffett (1 for 3, RBI) and Vanessa Fisher (1 for 4, RBI).
It was all Eagles in their April 19 clash with Willits, exploding for a combined 14 runs in the third and fourth innings en route to a 16-0 rout in five. Bird (5 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 9 Ks) was stellar, while leading hitters included Bird (2 for 3, 2 2Bs, 3 runs, 4 RBIs), Hammond (2 for 3, 2 runs), Moffett (2 for 2, 2B, 3B, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), Martinez (1 for 3, 2 runs, RBI), Maci Hernandez (1 for 2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) and Lane Hughes (1 for 2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs).
