Girls seeking return trip to
postseason play
The Cloverdale Lady Eagles varsity basketball team will have a tough act to follow this year on the heels of one of the best seasons in school history.
The Eagles posted a 24-7 record last year, complete with a pair of North Coast Section playoff wins to advance to the semifinals. The great showing earned Cloverdale a spot in the prestigious CIF Nor Cal State Playoff Tournament for the first time since 2002.
Although the team graduated all five of its starters from that squad, the Lady Eagles return a solid nucleus of six players that are skilled and seasoned at the varsity level.
The 2016/17 roster includes seniors Katie Edwards, Ruby Stone, Paloma Santos, juniors Jaedyn Jenkins, Camryn Figueroa, Hannah Bereschi, Shaye Stewart, sophomore Kayli Persons and talented freshman Tehya Bird.
Eagles notch win
Cloverdale kicked off the season in winning fashion in the annual Foundation Game on Nov. 22, easily defeating visiting Sonoma Academy, 36-21.
Although the game doesn’t count toward the official win-loss record, it does give participating teams a glimpse of things to come.
The Eagles got contributions from nearly their entire bench, with eight of nine players landing in the scoring column. Pacing the offensive attack were Bird (10 pts 7 rebounds, 1 steal), Paloma (9 points, 4 rebounds, 7 steals), Stewart (6 points, 8 boards, 1 assist), Figueroa (7 points, 9 rebounds 3 steals), Jenkins (2 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals), Edwards (2 points), Persons (7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) and Stone (2 rebounds, 2 steals).
Scheduling notes
The Eagles will begin the preseason in earnest this week when they travel to Kelseyville for the annual Stokes Tournament on Dec. 1-3. Cloverdale opens the tourney on Dec. 1 with a 9 a.m. tip-off against Upper Lake.
