The Lady Eagles soccer team completed a magical league campaign last week just at it began – with a pair of dominant victories over NCL-1 opponents.
Cloverdale recorded lopsided wins over Fort Bragg (4-1), and St. Helena (5-1) to end the league season with a record of 13-1 and 17-1 on the year. Since the Eagles split a pair of matches with defending champion Middletown, the teams will finish as co-champions.
After finishing second to the Mustangs for the last two seasons, 2013 will go down as an historic campaign for the girls soccer program.
“We set (team) records for the most goals in a season with 88 and the least goals allowed with 11,” reported veteran Cloverdale coach Steve Stewart. “We also had the most shutouts with 12, most wins with 17 and least losses in a season with one. Our seniors finished with a 60-12-9 record over their four years.”
Cloverdale seniors included Jazmin Orozco, Amy Mora, Hannah Faso, Viviana Martinez, and Ashley Evans.
At press time Cloverdale was preparing for a Tuesday, Oct. 29 showdown with arch-rival Middletown to decide which team gets the automatic North Coast Section playoff berth when the postseason brackets are filled out this weekend. The loser will apply for an at-large berth in the upcoming NCS tournament.
“Regardless of who wins, both teams will be a top-four seed in the playoffs,” Stewart predicted. “Most likely Sonoma Academy will be a number one seed, the winner of our game will get the two seed and the loser will be a three or four.”
