— The HJH Boosters support youth sports and the group is looking for additional parent volunteers.

Group is in search of treasurer and secretary
The Healdsburg Junior High School Boosters, an organization which raises funds for junior high school sports programs, is asking for parent volunteer assistance in their mission to support student teams. Currently, the boosters are hoping to fill their open positions for treasurer and secretary, but any amount of volunteered time will be appreciated, according to Boosters President Lisa Doms.
Sports programs that the Boosters help support at the junior high school include boys and girls basketball, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, along with track, soccer, volleyball, cross-country and wrestling, among others.
“We raise funds for uniforms, for sports, with our fundraisers like the snack bar,” said Doms. “We try to keep the district from paying so much for the basketball court hoops…we try to make it for track so they have extra track shoes. There’s so many different things that we do to help the sports teams.”
Currently, the Boosters are looking at practice uniforms for the basketball team, because it’s been years since they were replaced, Doms said. Also, she hopes to someday raise money for a trophy case, to display the numerous trophies the junior high has won over the years.
Seventh grade girl’s basketball coach Jim Lago said he hopes he can get more uniforms and better basketballs for his team. According to Lago, “The Boosters are a great organization that supports the youth of our community.”
According to Doms, the junior high school Boosters’ secretary and treasurer retired just last year, and Doms is hoping to get a couple of parents to come in and take their place. She encourages any parent that’s interested with a child on one of the school’s sports teams to contact the Boosters and sign up. The treasurer’s responsibilities would include shopping for materials and products the teams need to play, helping with fundraisers, and managing the Boosters’ accounts. The secretary, Doms said, would work with her to help organize the agenda for meetings, collaborate with coaches for maximum attendance, and type up the minutes.
Parents can volunteer to help the Boosters in a number of other ways, as well, if they aren’t comfortable filling one of the vacant positions. “It helps to have parents who know the children, who are willing to help,” said Doms. “We need parents there. They have to keep score. Sometimes we need people to collect paperwork, or spread the word. The snack bar is our main fundraiser and it would help if we had other parents to come in and help. On the day of a game, just come in and help for an hour. That would really relieve me and the other president, just for someone to help watch over some of the kids or do other things.”
Doms hopes that more volunteers will help the Boosters grow to the point where she is able to collaborate with the Healdsburg High School Boosters at their meetings. “They are showing me certain things I didn’t know,” she said, “showing me how to do certain fundraisers. There’re new opportunities coming up, and we want to be prepared for that, but we can’t get prepared if we’re still trying to fulfill our basic needs.”
