James (Jimbo) Hall Markowitz, 35, of Sebastopol, died on June 6
of a long-term brain tumor at Marin General Hospital with his
friends and family by his side. Jimbo had been a Sonoma County
resident since 1995. He worked in the deli at Food for
Thought/Whole Foods in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol for many years. He
later worked as a carpenters’ apprentice for Artisan Builders in
Sebastopol. Jimbo was a talented guitar and harmonica player. He
was a great entertainer and could keep a party going into the early
morning with his great repertories of songs. He was known for his
loud, wild bird calls, his extreme vocal improvisation and his
sweet heart. He loved to play along to his favorite CDs, Grateful
Dead, Santana and others, often until the sun came up. He was a
long time vegetarian and environmental/political activist. A
devotee of kundalini maha yoga, Jimbo embraced a spirit of giving
and a strong work ethic. He is survived by his mother and father,
Margaret and William Markowitz of Pennsylvania, his brother and
sister-in-law Dale and Cathy, three nieces and one nephew. His
sweetheart Leora Sarachek of Sebastopol was his girlfriend and
caretaker for the past two years and any donations can be sent to
her at P.O. Box 1245, Sebastopol 95473. Jimbo was born in Dorby,
Philadelphia, June 21, 1967. He was raised in Folsom, PA and
graduated high school there. In the late ’80s he moved to Santa
Cruz and attended Cabrillo College. He transferred to Santa Rosa
Junior College in the early ’90s where he studied music.
His kindnesses and his enthusiastic love of life began a ripple
affect of warmth that will be felt for a long time by those who
knew him well.
