Windsor falls to 3-5; hosts Ukiah this Friday
The varsity football Jaguars continued to navigate a treacherous stretch in the North Bay League Oak Division on Friday, suffering a 45-7 shellacking at the hands of visiting Cardinal Newman.
The setback came on the heels of a 44-0 loss to Rancho Cotate a week earlier and pushed the Jags’ league record to 1-2 and 3-5 overall.
The Oct. 12 result was not a shock against the nationally ranked Cardinals, who’ve steamrolled the competition on their way to a 7-1 mark on the year.
“Newman was definitely a good team that was well coached,” Windsor head coach Brad Stibi said. “We couldn’t match their speed on either side of the ball.”
The Jaguars will start the final phase of the season this week when they play host to a solid Ukiah squad this Friday, Oct. 19 (7:30 p.m.). The Wildcats improved to 2-1 in the NBL and 6-2 on the season on Friday with a 45-0 rout over Analy.
“Ukiah is playing well right now,” Stibi noted. “I expect a good game, and the winner will be determined by the team with fewer mistakes.”
Jags swamped by Cardinals
It was clear early on in Friday’s home clash that Windsor would have its hands full containing the Cardinal’s speed, and Newman’s playmakers wasted no time in stretching the field.
The visitors drew first blood with a 25-yard pass play from quarterback Jackson Pavitt to Chauncey Leberthon for an early lead, finding pay-dirt later in the period on a two-yard plunge from Shane Moran to make it 14-0 after one. The Cardinals exploded for 28 points in the decisive second quarter, taking a 42-0 lead at the half.
Windsor avoided the shutout in the third period when running back Nick Landeros broke free on a 55-yard touchdown burst followed by a successful point after kick by Otis Cain. It proved to be the highlight of the night for the Jaguars as Newman powered to an eventual 45-7 win.
Quarterback Nick Pariani led the Windsor offense, completing nine of 11 pass attempts for 83 yards. Lorenzo Leon was the leading ground gainer with 43 yards on 11 carriers, while Mikey Contreras led the receiving corps with three catches for 33 yards.
Christian Sanchez and Landan Estrela led the Jags’ defense with five tackles apiece.
