The Jaguars took a huge step in their quest for a coveted North Bay League soccer title on Feb. 1, playing arguably their best match of the season in a 2-0 shutout win over the visiting Montgomery Vikings.

The victory moved the Jags into first place at 8-1-1 (11-3-2 overall), just ahead of the second-place Vikings (9-2). Rounding out the league standings (as of Feb. 2) were Rancho Cotate (7-4), Casa Grande (5-3-3), Santa Rosa (6-4-1), Ukiah (2-7), Maria Carrillo (1-7-1) and Cardinal Newman (0-10).

Windsor will be back on the NBL pitch on Feb. 3 when it visits Casa Grande (6 p.m.), followed by a Monday, Feb. 6 trip to Cardinal Newman (7 p.m.). The Jaguars will wrap up league play with home and away matches with Cardinal Newman (Feb. 8, 7 p.m.) and Rancho Cotate (Feb. 10, 6 p.m.).

Jags claim victory

Windsor was focused and ready for the Feb. 1 rematch with first-place Montgomery, a team that had handed the Jags their lone NBL loss in a 3-1 setback on Jan. 11. This night would belong to the Jaguars, drawing first blood in the 29th minute on a header by Olin Piotter for a a1-0 lead at the half.

Windsor’s back line, anchored by goalie Leo Bossard, held strong to deny several Montgomery scoring chances throughout the second half before the Jags got the insurance goal they were looking for.

With three minutes to play, Windsor’s Derek Neidlinger launched a free kick from the top of the penalty box that was headed in by teammate Raymundo Duenas.

The Jags’ defense dug in for the final minutes to preserve a 2-0 win.

Bossard turned in a masterful game to record his eighth shutout of the season.

Injury notes

Windsor defender Paul Bossard suffered a shoulder injury against Montgomery and will be out for an unspecified amount of time.
