The Jaguars logged an historic week on the high school wrestling mat, capturing both North Bay league and North Coast Section duals titles within a span of three days.
Windsor began the stretch with a Feb. 7 visit to Casa Grande, recording a convincing 58-21 win over the Gauchos to complete an unbeaten NBL dual meet season at 7-0.
On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Jags were the #1 seed at NCS Duals Team Championships hosted by El Molino, soundly defeating Drake (60-10), Petaluma (50-24) and Ukiah (52-25) to capture the Division 2 title.
“It was a very nostalgic meet since I wrestled at El Molino in high school, and fun to watch our kids do what I was able to do back then as a young athlete,” Jags coach Rich Carnation said. “The meet was a reminder that sometimes things don’t go as well as you’d like them to individually, but when the team does well that’s what’s important.”
Scoring individual victories for the Jaguars were 108-pound Blake Fredrickson (2-0),108-pound Jon Fredrickson (1-0), 115-pound Brandon Fong (3-0), 122-pound Justin Campbell (2-1), 128-pound Tony Russotti (1-2), 132-pound Conor Brown (3-0), 140-pound Brennen Brown (2-1), 147-pound Gil Brantley (2-1), 154-pound Trent Silva (3-0), 162-pound Jacob Campos (2-1), 170-pound Justin Calvi (1-0), 182-pound Lorenzo Leon (3-0), 195-pound Alex Cruz (3-0), 220-pound Ben Smith (1-1) and heavyweight Austin Jacob (3-0).
This Saturday, Feb. 17, Windsor will be the team to beat at the North Bay League Championship Tournament hosted by Montgomery (9 a.m.). The Jaguars need only to finish ahead of second place Ukiah in team points to win the NBL title outright.
The first stop for athletes with state aspirations, participants at the NBL tourney will be gunning for a top-three finish in their respective weight class to advance to the North Coast Section Championships on Feb. 23-24 at James Logan High School in Union City. A top three finish at NCS will earn a trip to the prestigious CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield on Mar. 2-3.
“We could have somewhere between 11 and 14 kids that qualify for NCS,” Carnation predicted. “Our goal is always to qualify kids in every weight class, but we’ll do the best we can.”
