Windsor will kick off NBL schedule this week
The Windsor High School volleyball team opened the 2017 season in winning fashion, recording hard-fought victories over Piner and Alameda.
At press time the Jaguars (2-0) were preparing to open defense of their North Bay League co-championship on Sept. 12 at Rancho Cotate, followed by a Thursday, Sept. 14 home date with Cardinal Newman. Start times beginning with the frosh match are 4/5/6:30 p.m.
Windsor kicked off an abbreviated pre-league schedule on Aug. 31 at Piner, turning back the Prospectors in four sets; 25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 25-18.
“We knew we still had a lot of things to figure out,” WHS coach Rich Schwarz reported. “Our serve receive was really bad and overall we made way too many errors.”
The Jags were back on the court at Alameda on Sept. 6, a good test against a perennial playoff contender. Again, Windsor controlled the action to win the first pair of sets, 25-23 and 25-17 before making wholesale lineup changes in dropping game three, 17-25. The Jaguars righted the ship in the fourth set to erase an early deficit and close out the match, 25-17.
“Team captain libero Kylie Benjamin and sophomore DS Izzy Earl stepped up with improved passing,” Schwarz noted. “That resulted in a barrage from outside hitter Destiny Clark who recorded eight of her team high 13 kills in the final game.”
Other statistical leaders included senior setter Kaitlyn Alger (24 assists), Brittany Johnson (eight kills) and Elena Dyer (six kills).
Although the team continues to work out kinks and settle on a lineup, Schwarz is confident in his team’s ability going forward.
“For us to have a successful season our passing and serving must be fixed,” he said. “I have faith that the girls will put in much more dedication and effort to our practices to fix these problems.
