The varsity basketball Jaguars opened the much-anticipated winter campaign in winning fashion on Saturday, turning back the host Healdsburg Greyhounds, 68-65 in a thriller.
The match-up between North Bay rivals was tight throughout, with the teams never separated by more than a couple of buckets all game.
“I’m very happy with how my guys played,” Windsor coach Jared Greninger said in logging his first win with the Jags. “We had to switch between several defensive formations to try and get Healdsburg’s offense out of rhythm, but despite our struggles on defense, we were able to execute our game plan throughout the night.”
Led by the potent backcourt of guards Jordan Merical (19 points) and Billy Boyle (16) and the inside-outside scoring of forward Jack Amormino (12), the Jaguars led 34-30 at the half and held off every Healdsburg challenge to hang on for a narrow victory. Also turning in a strong performance for the Jaguars was senior point guard Andrew Corcoran. Senior center Trey Chapman led the Greyhounds with 34 points.
“We shot well from behind the arc and also found many ways to score inside against their big guys,” Greninger noted. “We were fortunate to get a win on the road with Chapman scoring 34 points.”
Scheduling notes
At press time the Jags were preparing for their home opener against Elsie Allen on Tuesday, Nov. 27 (varsity 7:30 p.m.), and venture north for the annual Fred Iten Tournament on Nov. 29-Dec. 1). Windsor will open the tourney on Thursday, Nov. 29 in an 8:30 p.m. tip-off against Eureka.
