Windsor enters final stretch of league schedule at 9-1
The varsity basketball Jaguars maintained a share of first place in the North Bay League title chase, scoring convincing home victories over Santa Rosa and Rancho Cotate to push their record to 9-1.
“It was a good week for us, we played well in both games,” veteran coach Travis Taylor said after recording his 100th win as Jags’ coach on Friday. “We’ll have two tough games on the road this week but we’re excited for the challenge.”
At the start of play this week Windsor (17-5 overall) was locked in a three-way tie at the top with Montgomery and Cardinal Newman with just four games left on the league schedule.
The Jags will resume NBL action on Jan. 30 (after press time) at Maria Carrillo, followed by a critical Feb. 1 visit to Montgomery. The Jaguars will close out the league campaign with dates at Cardinal Newman (Feb. 7) and home on Feb. 9 (Senior Night). Start times for the JV and varsity are 5 and 7:30 p.m.
Jags win a pair
Windsor took a while to get going in the Jan. 24 meeting with visiting Santa Rosa, erasing an 11-10 first-quarter deficit with a 23-13 run in the second. The Jaguars increased their advantage to 14 by the end of three before coasting to a 64-51 win.
Justin Smith paced the attack with 22 points and nine rebounds. Other good efforts were had by Riley Smith (18 points, 7 boards), Travis Carlozzi (11 points, 3 rebounds), Jordan Merical (11 points), Uli Vielma (2 points, 4 assists) and Jaden Ruybalid (1 point).
Windsor was in control from the opening tip on Friday against visiting Rancho Cotate, turning a 23-15 halftime lead into an insurmountable advantage en route to a 60-36 rout.
Pacing the Windsor offense were Riley Smith (21 points, 8 rebounds), Merical (13 points, 4 rebounds), Justin Smith (8 points), Carlozzi (8 points, 7 boards, 4 assists), Massimo Dicochea (5 points), Josh Brown (5 points) and Vielma (6 assists).
