The varsity baseball Jaguars maintained a stranglehold on first place in the North Bay League Redwood Division standings, defeating Healdsburg in a pair of recent outings. Windsor wrapped up a three-game stretch in as many days with a 6-5, non-league loss to Maria Carrillo.
At the start of play this week, the Jags (6-1, 8-4-1) were a half game up on second place Piner (5-1), followed by Santa Rosa (4-3), El Molino (1-4) and Healdsburg (0-7).
Windsor was to resume league play at Santa Rosa on April 15 (after press time), and will visit El Molino on Wednesday, April 17. The Jaguars will host the Lions in a rematch this Friday, April 19. All games start at 4 p.m.
Jags maul Hounds
The Jaguars opened a two-game home set with the Greyhounds on April 11, spotting the visitors a 1-0 lead in the third. It was all Windsor starter Matt Kemper (4 hits, 5 Ks) would allow in six innings of work.
“This was definitely Matt’s best outing of the season,” Jag’s coach Dave Avila said. “He pounded the strike zone all day.”
The Jags surged ahead with a run scoring, pinch-hit double from Ian McGee, followed by another RBI knock off the bat of Carson Ramocinski for a 2-1 lead. Windsor added an insurance tally in the sixth when Brett Boudrow doubled and scored on a single from Nick Pariani for an eventual 3-1 victory.
Windsor entertained Healdsburg again on Friday, this time leaving no doubt about the outcome. The Jaguars pounded out 15 hits in a barrage of offense, scoring 12 runs in the first four frames en route to a 15-4 rout.
Sophomore FJ Freenor (5 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 4 Ks) notched the victory, while leading hitters were Cy Soltanizadeh (3 for 4, 2B, run, 3 RBIs), Will Matthews (2 for 3, 2B, 4 runs, 3 RBIs), Ramocinski (2 for 2, 2B, 4 runs, McGee (2 for 5, run, 2 RBIs), Joseph Soltanizadeh (2 for 4, 2B, run, 4 RBIs), Hunter Dannenbring (1 for 2, 2B, 3 runs), Nick Landeros (1 for 1), Boudrow (1 for 3, run) and Cameron Hayman (1 for 4, RBI).
Windsor wrapped up a three-game week on Saturday against visiting Maria Carrillo, a game that marked the return of injured pitcher Tyler Hellums. The senior ace didn’t skip a beat as he fired a complete game, scattering three hits and one earned run while fanning nine. The performance was matched by Carrillo ace Bryce Veler, as he and the Pumas did just enough to emerge with a 6-5 win.
“It was our third game in a row, and our batters didn’t hold up their end of the contest,” Avila noted. “We squandered two great opportunities that Veler made big time pitches to get of jams.”
Joseph Soltanizadeh led the attack with a single and a double, while Boudrow added the only other hit for the Jags.
