Windsor off to strong 3-1 start with pair of victories
The varsity baseball Jaguars are coming off a solid stretch on the preseason baseball circuit, logging two wins in three outings to push their record to 3-1.
The Jags opened the string on March 6 with a tough, 6-5 setback to visiting Terra Linda, but bounced back on Saturday in Forestville with wins over Kelseyville (10-6) and El Molino (2-0).
Weather permitting, Windsor will resume pre-league action at home on Wednesday, March 14 against Piner (4 p.m.), followed by a Saturday, March 17 visit to Alameda (11 a.m.). The Jags will open the league schedule on Wednesday, March 21 in a home tilt with Rancho Cotate (4 p.m.).
Jags take two
The Jaguars suffered their first setback of the spring campaign in their March 6 clash with visiting Terra Linda, with all the scoring coming in a wild third inning.
The Trojans roughed up Windsor starter Cyrus Soltanizadeh, capitalizing on three hit batsmen and a key two-run single to plate an eventual six runs. The Jags answered in the bottom of the frame with five runs of their own to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
Pitchers Kevin Winter (2.1 IP) and Cameron Hayman (2 IP) combined forces to stop the bleeding, but the score remained unchanged as the Trojans hung on for a 6-5 win.
Collecting hits for the Jags were Reece Arreguin (1 for 2, run), Nick Pariani (1 for 3), Soltanizadeh (1 for 3), Carson Ramocinski (1 for 2, run, RBI) and Ian McGee (1 for 3, run).
Windsor traveled to Forestville for a Saturday double-dip against Kelseyville and host El Molino, taking on the Knights in game one.
Senior Eric Begley climbed the hill in a winning effort against Kelseyville, firing six innings, yielding four hits and one earned run in a great outing before Hayman closed it out in a scoreless seventh. The Jaguars broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth on a two-run single by Soltanizadeh and never gave back the lead en route to a 10-6 victory.
Top hitters for the Jags were Will Matthews (1 for 4, run, RBI), Arreguin (1 for 2, run), Tyler Hellums (1 for 3, 2 runs, RBI), Hayman (1 for 1, run, 2 RBIs), Tanner Tobon (1 for 2, run), Aidan Boettger (1 for 1, run), Soltanizadeh (1 for 3, run, RBI) and Ramocinski (1 for 2, run, RBI).
The Jags got all the runs they needed in the first inning in the nightcap against El Molino, as Soltanizadeh connected on a booming two-run homer. The Lions clawed back in the bottom of the frame with a solo run, but starter Tyler Hellums settled down to toss 6.1 innings of three-hit ball in an eventual 2-1 win. Hayman earned the save for Windsor.
Pacing the hitting corps were Soltanizadeh (2 for 3, HR, run, 2 RBIs), Chris Torres (2 for 3), Hayman (1 for 3, run) and Ramocinski (1 for 3).
