Windsor will compete in Rose City Tourney this weekend
The Jaguars improved to 3-1 on the young season last weekend at the Fred Iten Basketball Tournament in Ukiah, taking two of three games played to bring home a third-place trophy.
Windsor sandwiched wins over Fort Bragg (61-35) and Fortuna (61-42) with a 45-33 loss to tourney champ Fremont in what amounted to a strong preseason showing.
“Overall it was a good weekend for the team,” Jags head coach Travis Taylor reported. “Fremont tested us with their pressure defense, and we will continue to work on ball security and team defense.”
Next up for the Jaguars is participation in the annual Rose City Tournament hosted by Cardinal Newman on Dec. 8-10. Windsor will open up against Elsie Allen on Thursday, Dec. 8 in a 3:30 p.m. tip-off.
Jags’ third-place finish
It was all Windsor in the opening tilt with Fort Bragg in the Fred Iten tourney on Dec. 1, exploiting a size advantage in powering to a 61-35 rout. Justin Smith led the team with 26 points, while Riley Smith chipped in 13 for the Jags.
Windsor had a tough draw in Friday’s second game against Fremont, with the teams playing on even terms for much of the game before the Tigers pulled away with a late run. The Jags took a 33-31 lead with six minutes to play, but Fremont finished the game on a 14-0 run to seal the eventual 45-33 victory. Riley Smith led all Jaguars with 11 points.  The Jags were just 2-19 from three-point range.
The Jaguars wrapped up a solid tournament in Saturday’s get-away game against Fortuna, easily defeating the Huskies in a 61-42 romp.  Riley Smith poured in a career high 31 points, while other scorers included Justin Smith (11), Travis Carlozzi (9), Brock Tolson (5), Brandon Mallie (3) and AJ Whaley (2).
Riley Smith and Justin Smith were each named to the All-Tournament team for Windsor.
