Windsor can close out championship season this week
The varsity baseball Jaguars are on the cusp of their first ever North Bay League championship this week, needing just one win in two scheduled games against Piner to capture the title outright.
At press time the Jags (9-1, 12-5-1) were a game up on second place Prospectors (8-2), with a home and away series with Piner set for May 1 and 3. Windsor will wrap up the regular season campaign on Saturday, May 4 in a 1 p.m. tilt at Analy.
The Jaguars continued their march toward the postseason with two wins in three recent outings, beginning with a non-league trip to Ukiah on April 22. Windsor suffered one of its worst losses of the year in an 11-1 setback.
“For the first time all year our team was beaten up by timely hitting, and a strong pitching performance by the Wildcats,” WHS coach Dave Avila said. “We came out a little flat, and Ukiah is really tough at their field at night.”
Pitcher Cy Soltanizadeh (4 IP, 11 hits, 5 ERs, 5 Ks) took the loss while FJ Freenor (2 IP, 3 hits, 2 ERs, 3 Ks) closed it out. Top hitters were Ian McGee (2 for 3), Joseph Soltanizadeh (1 for 4, RBI), Carson Ramocinski (1 for 3) and Cy Soltanizadeh (1 for 3, run).
The Jags were back in winning form two days later at Santa Rosa, riding the strong arm of ace hurler Tyler Hellums (6 IP, 2 hits, ER, 12 Ks) in an 8-2 victory. Hellums was masterful, while Matt Kemper (1 IP, 1 hit, 2 Ks) pitched the seventh. Collecting two hits apiece were Will Matthews, Gary Hall and Josh Delatorre. Brett Boudrow added a key two-out, 2-run RBI single.
Windsor played host to reigning NCS Division 2 champion Alameda on Saturday, staging a dramatic, five-run rally in the seventh inning to walk off with an 8-7 victory. The Jags trailed 7-3 heading into their final at-bat, but strung together three hits, a walk and three Alameda errors. One of key hits was a two-out, two-run single off the bat of JV call-up Josh Delatorre to tie it up. Boudrow followed with a hot smash that was mishandled by the third baseman to plate the winning run.
The Jags got it done with a pitching staff by committee, including mound stints from Hall (3 IP, 5 hits, 2 ERs, 4 Ks), Kemper (2.1 IP, 2 hits, 3 ERs, 2 Ks), Freenor (1 IP, hit, ER, K) and Cameron Hayman (WP, 0.2 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs). Top hitters were Hall (2 for 3, run), Delatorre (2 for 4, run, 3 RBIs), Ramocinski (2 for 3, 2B, 2 runs), Joseph Soltanizadeh (1 for 2, run), Hayman (1 for 4) and Cy Soltanizadeh (1 for 4, run, RBI).
