August highlights
We are in our August routine: the “crush,” sidewalk sales, back-to-school scurry and a fond farewell to summer. Fall is almost here. Send pre-autumnal notes to “IDlewood 3…” at id*******@hb*****.com. “Hedda Healdsburg” wants to know all.

The newest (and undoubtedly youngest) resident at Healdsburg Senior Living on Grove Street is Bailey Bell, a chocolate Labrador puppy born on May 20. Owner/Caretaker Lori Matthias, the Residential Care Coordinator there, said, “We wanted to have a therapy dog onsite all the time, a community pet.” Bailey was welcomed at a reception where dog biscuit-shaped people cookies were enjoyed by the humans. She is currently at canine training school, but will return full-time soon. “Bailey’s not afraid of walkers or wheelchairs,” Lori added. “She’s a brave little soul.” Guests and families will be able to play fetch or walk Bailey when they visit.

If you missed the annual Bastille Day event at Costeaux French Bakery, well, it was ooh-la-la. Can-can dancers, Marie Antoinette and wonderful cabaret music entertained the diners. Echoes of “Bon jour, bon jour,” were heard throughout the restaurant. Anne Vercelli proffered a tray of amazing French pastries. Trés bon.

For a midweek break, stroll to the Wednesday Farmers’ Market, 3 to 6 p.m. on North Street, next to SHED. On a recent Wednesday, tomatoes were the star of the day. Yellow, red, orange, purple – beauties, all. Boxes were lined up at the Reyes Farm stand. Yael Bernier had the glowing, sungold variety. She also had peppers as bright red as a late summer sunset. Renee Kiff brought luscious peaches. In the background, a young man played folk guitar and sang. “He sounds like Bob Dylan,” Yael commented. He did.

The Lake County fires up north affected animals, too. The Humane Society, along with other local rescue groups, brought down strays from the shelter there in order to make room for evacuated pets. They have run short of supplies, like small cat beds and sturdy, black Kongs. There is an Amazon Wish List, if you need ideas for donations. Go to http://sonomahumane.org, or drop off items at the shelter’s Healdsburg Center on Bacchus Landing Way (off Westside Road), open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Celebrity sightings. An “Indie” movie was being filmed around and about town, including at Valette restaurant. Actor James Franco has been spotted around the county. And, Facebook cofounder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife were at SHED on a recent Sunday.

Congratulations to J. Patch Guglielmino, who was just named as Chaplain for Healdsburg District Hospital. She also works for hospice as a caregiver and grief counselor and at Memorial Hospital as a liaison in the emergency room. You may have seen Patch and her therapy dog, Isabella, in town or at Sonoma County Airport.

“Healdsburg’s Immigrants,” a new book by local writer (and Tribune columnist) Shonnie Brown has hit the stands. “I interviewed 24 immigrants in Healdsburg and Geyserville,” said Shonnie. “They came here from all over the world.” She advised that there are stories from both well-known and lesser-known locals. The book is for sale at the museum’s gift shop and ties in nicely with the upcoming exhibit of the same name. There will be a reading by Shonnie and some of the local storytellers featured in her book in the museum gardens on Oct. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Well-deserved. Karen and Harry Bosworth are the 2015 recipients of Healdsburg Museum’s Pioneer Award. This award honors long-time contributors to the history of Healdsburg and northern Sonoma County. The list of past honorees going back to 1999 reads like a “Who’s Who” of our area. Congratulations
