Members of local government, the media, business and non-profits
will join with the Redwood Empire Food Bank to put the spotlight on
hunger in Sonoma County when they serve lunch to school children as
part of National Hunger Awareness Day on June 3 at Roseland School,
950 Sebastopol Rd. in Santa Rosa. Goodman said this year’s Hunger
Awareness Day will highlight the “summer gap” in food assistance
for thousands of children in Sonoma County. “While more than 25,000
low-income children in the greater Santa Rosa area depend on free
and reduced price meals they get at school during the academic
year, there are very few opportunities for these kids to receive
the meals during the summer,” he said. “Last year, there were only
four sites open with only 2,700 children, just 11 percent,
receiving meals during the summer.” Information on how to start a
summer lunch site is available by calling Goodman at 523-7900.
