Lady Eagles no longer unbeaten in league
Cloverdale High School teams suffered a similar fate on NCL-1 softball and baseball diamonds last week, each managing an even split in a pair of games.
The Lady Eagles (9-4, 4-1) fell from the ranks of the league’s unbeaten on April 17, coming out on the short end of a 2-1, 13-inning heartbreaker at Clear Lake. The loss came on the heels of an 11-1 romp over host St. Helena, a result which knocked Cloverdale into third place, a half game back of Lower Lake (4-0) and Clear Lake (5-1).
At press time, the ladies were preparing to wrap up a road swing at Kelseyville on April 21 before returning home to host Willits this Friday, April 21 (4 p.m.).
Meanwhile, the varsity baseball Eagles (9-8, 4-3) also achieved a split in two league outings, combining a 6-4 win over St. Helena with a 3-2 loss at Clear Lake in eight innings.
The boys will continue a protracted road swing at Kelseyville on April 21, followed by a Tuesday, April 28 visit to Lower Lake. First pitch for all games is 4 p.m.
Ladies’ mixed bag
Cloverdale clung to a 3-1 lead over host St. Helena on April 14 before exploding for eight runs in the sixth inning to bust it wide open en route to an 11-1 win.
Pitcher Teanne Edens (7 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 10 Ks) earned the win, while top hitters included Bailey Creager (2 for 4, 2B, HR, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Edens (1 for 4, 3B, 2 runs, RBI), Amber Adams (1 for 3, run), Ashley Durant (1 for 3, run, RBI), Josie Marrufo (2 for 4, run, RBI) and Jordyn Turner (1 for 2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs).
The Eagles traveled to Clear Lake for what developed into a classic pitcher’s duel, as Edens locked horns with Cardinals hurler Rachel Wingler. Cloverdale struck for a solo run in the second for the early lead, but Clear Lake responded with a run in the fourth to knot the contest at 1-1. The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the 13th, when the Cardinals finally broke through for a run to escape with a 2-1 win.
Edens (13 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 17 Ks) deserved a better fate, while Wingler (13 IP, 7 hits, 18 Ks) notched the win. Top hitters were Monica Lemley (2 for 6), Edens (2 for 5), Siera Morse (1 for 5), Creager (1 for 5, run, RBI), Marrufo (1 for 4) and Turner (1 for 6).
Hardballers gain split
The Cloverdale baseball Eagles played host to St. Helena in their April 14 clash, sending pitcher Chris Harms to the hill opposite Saints starter Alex Archer. The Eagles drew first blood with a three-run first inning, adding solo runs in the second, third and fourth innings for a 6-0 lead. The Saints rallied for four runs in their final at-bat but would fall 6-4.
Pacing the Eagles hit squad were Pat Ojeda (3 for 4), Harms (2 for 4), David Watson (2 for 4, 2B), Scott Richardson (2 for 4) and Jon Alvarez (1 for 1).
Cloverdale was locked in a tense, 2-2 deadlock at Clear Lake on Friday, a game that the Cardinals pulled out with a winning run in the home-half of the eighth to post a 3-2 win.
Matt Heller earned the win for Clear Lake while Michael McDermott took the loss for Cloverdale. Top hitters were Jared Hibbeln (3 for 4) and Harms (2 for 4, 2B).  Â
