This year’s outstanding girls basketball team at Healdsburg High may have already taken home the top trophy for their local league, North Bay Redwood, but they’re not allowed to rest just yet. Their league win sent them straight into what are called the “regional” championships for the entire North Coast. In this sudden-death tournament, they’re up against the 16 top teams within their region and division, which is Division 4. And the pool is already down to eight teams. Our Healdsburg girls won their first home game in the tourney against Middletown High on Valentine’s Day, eking out a 36-34 win. Next up is an away game against Justin-Siena High tomorrow night. And it just so happens that Justin-Siena is very, very good. More from the Tribune’s news editor Christian Kallen: “Healdsburg’s next opponent will be Justin-Siena (#3 seed), the winner of their Feb. 14 game against Lower Lake (#14). The game will be played at the Napa school (4026 Maher St, Napa) at 5:30pm. Last year, when the Greyhounds took the North Bay Redwood title, they lost in the first round of the divisional playoffs. Already they are playing deeper into the playoffs. ‘We have and continue to enjoy our season and each other, so we want to keep it going as long as we can,’ said [Coach Jim Lago].” If they do win their game tomorrow night, they’ll have another game next Wednesday; and if they win that one, they would play in the tournament’s final game next weekend. And in the wild scenario that Healdsburg did emerge as the top team in their division across the whole North Coast, they would then find themselves at the Division 4 state championships in Sacramento late this month. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves… (Source: Healdsburg Tribune & MaxPreps & Press Democrat; paywall)
