February is wild steelhead month in Sonoma County and the annual Wild Steelhead Festival takes place in Healdsburg this Saturday, Feb. 9. “Celebrating the return of steelhead to the Russian River at the Lake Sonoma visitor center, said the Friends of Lake Sonoma, one of the festival’s sponsoring groups.
The festival is moving off the Healdsburg town plaza and the change of venue will allow visitors to see the Warm Springs Dam fish ladder and fish sortings at the dam’s hatchery along with other festival activities.
This free admission event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and features free activities at the visitor center. Visitors will enjoy over 25 educational exhibits, a free trout pond for young anglers, a fly fishing demonstration pond with tips from the pros, live steelhead display, art for kids to do, and a chance to try your hand at archery.
On hand with great information will be Trout Unlimited, Russian Riverkeeper, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Army Corp of Engineers, Sonoma County Water Agency, Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods Gold Ridge RCD, Bird Rescue, Sonoma County Mycological Society, the Free Bookmobile and many more.
Enjoy live music from Rosetown Ramblers and available for purchase: local brews from Bear Republic Brewery and Lagunitas Brewing Co., and fine wines from Truett-Hurst. Food trucks will be there: Chicago Style Hot Dogs, Paella and Ultimate Souvlaki.
The Visitor Center is located at 3288 Skaggs Springs Road, Geyserville: 10 minutes west of Healdsburg on Dry Creek Road off Hwy 101.
