Here’s what’s happening at the Senior Center in July:

Age-Friendly City Designation
On Monday, June 18, the city council adopted a resolution authorizing the application for Healdsburg to be designated a World Health Organization Age-Friendly City. I am proud to say that, with the support from our Senior Citizens Advisory Commission, Healdsburg will be the first city in Sonoma County to submit the application. Once approved, Healdsburg will join eight other cities in California who have received Age-Friendly designation and a network of over 1,000 communities worldwide. The designation is a commitment to the community that elected leadership will continue to work toward making Healdsburg livable for all ages, from eight to eighty and beyond For more information visit the eight-to-eighty website at: https://www.880cities.org.
Volunteer Program
I am pleased to announce that the multi-faceted volunteer program was approved in the fiscal year 2018-2020 budget and will be effective July 1, 2018. The volunteer program will operate from the Senior Center offices and will focus on developing the much-anticipated volunteer driver program and other citywide volunteer opportunities.
Once operational, the volunteer driver program will offer door-through-door service allowing drivers to assist older adults with carrying bags and navigating steps and sidewalks. The interaction between driver and rider will help to alleviate the isolation older adults can so easily incur when they retire from driving. The program will allow older adults to maintain their independence, stay active, engaged and increase community connections.
To learn more about the program, volunteer opportunities and the next steps in the process, feel free to contact me or stop by the Senior Center.
