A Healdsburg man was found guilty on all charges on March 20 on a four-count misdemeanor complaint stemming from an incident on Dec. 30, 2016. David Robert Brewer, 36, was sentenced Monday by Judge Julie Conger after a jury found Brewer guilty of two counts of battery on a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and battery.
The charges resulted from Brewer violently resisting Healdsburg police officers, who were attempting to serve him with an arrest warrant at his home in Healdsburg.
The event was captured on the officers’ body worn camera videos and played for the jury. They showed that when Brewer’s brother attempted to bring him to the door for officers, he was assaulted. Brewer then kicked the officers, causing minor injuries before he was restrained.
“Mr. Brewer’s choice to respond to a lawful court order by using force upon the police officers was properly punished, first by the jury verdict, then by the sentence imposed,” said District Attorney Jill Ravitch in a statement. “This is a case where body worn cameras captured the incident and the video provided evidence to the jury to consider, ultimately aiding in bringing the defendant to justice.”
The court sentenced Brewer to serve one year in the county jail and ordered him to attend anger management classes as conditions of his three-year grant of probation. Officer Craig Smith of the Healdsburg Police Department headed the investigation and the case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Robert Blade.
