Luther Burbank’s earthquake
notes
Luther Burbank’s recollections of the 1906 earthquake that
destroyed San Francisco and levelled downtown Santa Rosa will be on
display through October at the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens in
Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa and Sonoma avenues. The famed
horticulturist, who also had his experimental farm in Sebastopol,
helped pull survivors from the rubble of the Grand Hotel and later
described in meticulous detail a blow-by-blow account of the quake.
Burbank had been up all night before the April 18, 1906 quake
struck and was fully awake when the ground began to shake at 5
a.m.

“There is no religion without love, and people may talk
as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach
them to be good and kind to man and beast, it is all a sham.” -Anna
Sewell
“We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not
enough to make us love one another.” – Jonathan Swift
