The 26th annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival is coming up in June! It’s even featured as a line item on the Edge Esmeralda village calendar — so nabbing seats for these shows is likely going to be even more competitive than usual. Members of the Healdsburg Jazz organization can get their tickets now, and tickets for everyone else go on sale this Monday, April 8, at 10 a.m. The nine-day festival, whose theme this year is “The Power of Music,” will include some free public shows, per usual — like the big Juneteenth celebration and concert in the plaza on June 15, kicking off the festival with educational workshops and live music by Steve Turre, Person2Person, Darrell Grant and the MJ New quartet. A few days later, MJ’s Brass Boppers will also play a free show for “Tuesdays in the Plaza.” That same day, there’s a free artist talk at the library about the legacy of Duke Ellington. And the following weekend, the Healdsburg Jazz Future All-Stars Band will play outside at the farmers market. The final free show of the jazz fest will take place at the Healdsburg Hotel bar: “Sylvia Cuenca will lead her trio into a live set before hosting an exciting all-star session featuring local and festival musicians jamming together,” festival organizers say. OK, now for the really big names. Here’s the lineup for this year’s Healdsburg Jazz Festival — hosted at venues like the Raven, the Elephant in the Room, St. Paul’s Church, the Bacchus Landing wine-tasting collective and other local hotels and wineries. We’ve got: “Best New Artist” Grammy winner Samara Joy; the Howard Wiley Quartet; Omar Sosa and his Quarteto Americanos; Bruce Forman with a musical theater performance called “The Red Guitar”; the Jazz Mafia performing “New Directions in Brass”; the Marcus Shelby Orchestra with vocalist Jazzmeia Horn; trombonist/vocalist Natalie Cressman with guitarist Ian Faquini; the Cookers Septet band with Chief Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott) and his band; Santana trumpeter Bill Ortiz and his quintet with duo Amendola vs. Blades and saxophonist Raffi Garabedian; the Freedom Jazz Choir, led by Tiffany Austin; Grammy-winning vocalist Lisa Fischer and pianist Taylor Eigsti, accompanied by two world-renowned ballet dancers; and the Joshua Redman Quartet with vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
