The earthy smell of pumpkin wafted through the air Saturday morning as kids got their hands dirty carving and decorating pumpkins and showing off their costumes at the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market 34th annual Pumpkin festival.
The annual small town tradition kicked off with kids giving their best pose for the judges in the children’s portion of the contest.
Costumes had to be homemade and were encouraged to be market or farm-related.
A pair of straw-hat clad scarecrow girls, Katelyn F. and Gracie McAllister won the first place prize for the 8-15 age group. The 7 and under age group first place ribbon went to a werewolf whose costume was made out of boxes and Post-it notes. The adult (16 and up) contest winner was Trish Evans, who was also dressed as a scarecrow.
Contest prized included market bucks and gift certificates from Healdsburg SHED, Copperfield’s Books, The Toy Chest, Jimtown Store, the Healdsburg Running Company and Mr. Moons.
The morning’s festivities concluded with pumpkin carving and a pumpkin car race.
