Healdsburg’s Zucchini Festival turned up a variety of creative zucchinis at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, Aug. 9. Zucchinis were judged in age groups in terms of their size, creative decorations and a race.
Mary Kelley, manager of the Farmer’s Market, said that “the festival reminds people of seasonality and that the market continues beyond summer, often when school starts people forget that the Farmer’s Market continues.”
“The best part is seeing the kid come out in everybody when the cars are racing,” Kelley said.
Janice Allen from Cloverdale had the largest zucchini, weighing in at just over 11 pounds. She said she got her vegetable so big by growing it on a cage to keep gophers out.
Roshelle Mueller won the most creative title, as well as the race, in the adult section of the festival. Her zucchini was a car with a little egg man piloting it.
Brady Mauritson won the kids category for most creative zucchini.
There were other winners and runner-ups for various age groups and categories of the zucchini contests and races.
