We’re nearly through July and the library is hopping with activity. The Summer Reading Programs are nearing their exciting conclusions. It’s been a great year for signups, with nearly 200 elementary school-age participants as well as dozens of teens and adults. One more week of events awaits. Don’t forget to come in and claim your prizes. In particular, don’t miss the final Mad Science Spectacular for ages five and up—learn how to make movie special effects sounds and watch how science can create super heroes. This extravaganza will occur on July 30 at 11 a.m.
The August Book Sale for the Friends of the Healdsburg Library will run from Wednesday, Aug. 5 to Saturday, Aug. 8. They are experimenting with new ideas: on Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m. a special gift books/wine books sale, open to the public. Thursday morning marks the beginning of the regular sale, with members-only access from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (join for $5 at the door) The rest of the sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is open to the public, with an all-day $5 bag sale on Saturday — bring your own bags, find a good read and support the library while you’re doing it.
For those of you wondering what’s going on with the Wine Library, here are a few updates: Now that I have moved into the branch manager role at the library, we are retooling positions, but hopefully soon we will have a new Wine Librarian. I will continue to provide the direction and strategy for the Wine Library as well as work collaboratively with the new person and am looking forward to that.
The Wine Library Associates of Sonoma County are modifying their name somewhat and henceforth plan to be known as Friends of the Sonoma County Wine Library. They have an exciting lineup of events scheduled, with author talks, film screenings and more coming up in the next several months. First up: Liz Thach, Master of Wine and Professor of Management and Wine Business at Sonoma State University, will give a “fireside chat” about her new book, “Call of the Vine: Exploring Ten Famous Vineyards of Napa and Sonoma” in an interview-style format with Healdsburg writer Linda Murphy on Friday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Wine Library. Come on down for a fun evening and support the Wine Library, a service for the industry and the public. For more information or to sign up for the event, look online: http://sclib.us/lizthach.
