Summer at the library
We’re gearing up for summer at the library. Get ready for some fun activities all summer long. Here are a few upcoming activities you’ll want to know about:
Book Buzz: Want to learn about or read new bestsellers before they become bestsellers — or even before they’re published? We are hosting a fun day with Penguin Random House publisher representatives that are bringing some new books that are sure to be of interest to our book lovers around town. You can get the inside scoop, plus free goodies and samplers. Keep calm and read on — Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m.
Charles Schulz Lecture: We invite you to come down for a visit from Schulz Museum Archivist Cesar Gallegos as he speaks about the museum’s collection, exhibits and projects. He will be bringing rarely seen treasures from the collection and speaking about Charles M. Schulz, his rise as a cartoonist, and his history in our fair county: Wednesday, May 25 at 6 p.m.
Lunch at the Library: This summer, from June 14 through August 5, the Healdsburg Library (along with seven other Sonoma County branch libraries) will be partnering up with Redwood Empire Food Bank to provide weekday summer lunch to children ages 0–18. Children who are eligible to receive a free lunch at school each day often go hungry when school is out during the summer, and our programs will help ensure that these hungry children are fed. Many, many thanks to the Friends of Healdsburg Library for helping us coordinate and provide this service to the public. Tuesday through Friday, bring kids to the library for free lunch — first come, first served — at noon. Adults: if you’re interested in helping volunteer, please let us know at 433-3772 and we’ll hook you up with our coordinator.
Summer Reading: Summer reading programs for kids, teens and adults will begin June 7. This year, our sports- and fitness-themed summer program is called “Read For The Win.” We start it all off with opening ceremonies at high noon on June 7, fun for any age as we conduct a torch relay across the county, including the torch coming through Healdsburg. Come to the library for a torch-passing ceremony, refreshments, crafts for the little ones.
Cheer on the torch bearer arriving from Cloverdale and he or she who will take the torch to Windsor. Of course, reading is for everyone, so even if you’re not into sports, you’re definitely going to like our program this year. Don’t be afraid — jump right in.
Beginning at the opening ceremony and continuing through the next couple of weeks, it’s time to sign up for Summer Reading for the whole family. In addition to our long-standing traditions for the kids, we enter our second year of Adult Summer Reading as well. Our Summer Bingo Challenge will not only get you reading, but also out into the world, attending events, learning languages, and taking a walk in a new park. Come and ask us about it—and happy reading to all.
Jon Haupt is the Branch Manager of the Healdsburg Regional Library.
