Catapults and volunteer opportunities
We have a few new programs this month — last week, we had a very popular first performance with local musician Karen Slavin, who we hope to bring back sometimes when we have weeks off of story time. We also had an extremely lively morning of family crafting magic with Sändra Novia facilitating the creation of miniature homes for sprites and fairies.
Soon up, a new series of engineering workshops for kids. Working with an organization called Northbay Engineering for Kids, we are offering programs aimed at specific age groups with specific projects each time. On Saturday, March 26, 5–8 year olds will produce marble runs while the 9–11 year olds create catapults. On April 2, ages 5–8 will work on an environmental engineering project, creating a windmill. Finally, April 23 features LED flashlights for ages 9–11. These hands-on workshops are totally free—but please call or drop by to sign up in advance: (707) 433-3772.
On Thursday, March 24, we have a teen event that should be fun — Tapigami, with artist Danny Scheible. Teens will learn the tactile methods for creating sculpture from tape and scissors. The first rule of Tapigami is to have fun while you are doing it. If you’re not having fun, you can’t be doing it right. Check it out at tapigami.com. This workshop is for teens in grades 7–12. It is totally free; everything is provided.
We’ve finally posted our Wine Librarian job out for the world to enjoy. As usual, the title “Wine Librarian” is enough to get a lot of attention, and our library system’s social media posts had hundreds of shares and tens of thousands of views in a matter of hours. Also as we all know, lots of applications means a lot of work for the search committee culling through them all—but hopefully we will end up with an extremely well-qualified and fabulous Wine Librarian, so it will all be worth the effort.
We’re in need of some volunteer help with an extended filing project in the Wine Library. Are you up to the challenge? It will probably take quite a bit of work to get this project completed—we need someone to help with shifting file folders in cabinets as part of a reorganization. If you are pretty excellent with filing and don’t mind a fair amount of getting up and down, this might interest you. Let Jon know at the library.
Jon Haupt is Branch Manager at the Healdsburg Regional Library.
