Winter greetings from the Healdsburg Library. We continue to work preparing for additional open hours as a result of the passage of Measure Y. As you may have heard, the library system is hiring over 30 new positions across the county. We anticipate many additional positions opening up over the next year as we work to improve library services and continue to expand open hours. In addition, we face an uncommon opportunity to improve our collections. As always, we wish to provide the most helpful information we can. If you have suggestions — such as magazine subscriptions you wish we would provide — we are all ears. We still can’t provide everything, but we’ll try to grant requests if we can.
We continue our “Healthy Living at Your Library” grant-funded program series this month with sessions on cooking with winter vegetables (Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m.), Ayurveda medicine (Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.), a health screening, and family fitness bootcamp (Jan. 28 at 10:30 and 11 a.m., respectively). Find a full list of upcoming Healdsburg Healthy Living events and register online at http://sclib.us/3F. Also, it’s not too late to sign up for our Healthy Living Club and win prizes by attending classes, checking out books and DVDs and completing a personal fitness challenge. Is anyone trying to live up to a New Year’s resolution? Here’s a great opportunity to start something new.
On a different note, we’re excited about how our ukulele classes have been attended this month. Kala Brand Music Company of Petaluma donated a few dozen ukuleles to the library system, providing the opportunity for classes across the county. Two family-oriented classes are coming up on the next two Saturdays, Jan. 21 and 28, at 2:30 p.m.; sign up online or come by to register for these classes taught by Scott Gifford. If you miss the opportunity this time, fear not, as the ukuleles will periodically return to the Healdsburg Library.
Coming up on Friday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m., we have a fun opportunity for ages 3–12 called Ooey Gooey Matter. This is part of our Tinker Thinkers series provided by the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County. Join us for learning, free exploration, and a chance to play with ooey-gooey materials — gases, solids, and liquids. This event is free and all materials will be provided.
