Librarian Jon Haupt

Happy harvest time from the library. As promised, we have more information to offer about our upcoming event celebrating 30 years in the Healdsburg Regional Library’s current location at Piper and Center Streets. We hope you’ll come to our celebration on Nov. 5, 2018 at 5 p.m.

This party will include buffet-style dinner by Agave Mexican Restaurant, treats and engaging speakers at 5:30 p.m., a performance by local 80s cover band Choppin’ Broccoli at 6 p.m., and a special all-ages community art project you can help create throughout the event.
Come share your memories and make new ones with your friends in the community. We could all use an evening of fun before all the action on Election Day. This celebration will be sponsored by both of our Library Friends groups — Friends of Healdsburg Library and Friends of the Sonoma County Wine Library.
Following our celebration, the Friends will be setting up for their next book sale. The sale will follow a typical pattern: Special extra-high-quality books are available throughout the sale starting on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 7. The main sale will start then as well, with a Friends members exclusive opportunity on the first day, all starting at 1 p.m.
After that, the sale will be offered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with an all-day $6 bag sale on Saturday; the sale will end on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. For more information, please review our online calendar or come and chat with us at the library.
On Saturday, Nov. 3, we offer a few events of note that are sure to interest the community. The day will start at 10:30 a.m. with another high-quality workshop provided by the Sonoma County Master Gardeners. This presentation by Lyle Bullock will be about composting.
That same day, we offer a free screening of the film “Racing the Rez” for Native American Heritage Month. This 57-minute film features Navajo and Hopi cross-country runners from two rival high schools putting it all on the line for tribal pride to triumph over adversity and aim for state championship glory. We will provide popcorn and snacks. For ages 9 and up. Families are welcomed.
We offer a meditation and stress reduction class for adults on Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. At this class, you can use movement, stillness, breath, visualization and sound to help calm, heal and balance your body, mind and spirit. Attendees will learn simple yet powerful meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques that can be done seated, standing or lying down.
For those engaged in research and class projects, if you haven’t familiarized yourself yet, we have a new special service available. Together with the California State Library, we now provide access to the Britannica Suite for your educational research and report building needs.
This suite provides free access to four separate products: Britannica School, an interactive online encyclopedia for K–12 education; Escolar, a Spanish-language resource for elementary through middle school students; Britannica Academic, including the encyclopedia, Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, and a curated collection of magazine and newspaper articles; and ImageQuest, a trove of rights-free images for educational, non-commercial use.
We hope all of these resources come in handy for all of your report writing needs.
